The McFarlane Tartan

On Memorial Day, Lodge Han Yang visited Yanghwajin Foreign Cemetery to pay tribute to past members who have passed on to the Celestial Lodge above.

The particular highlight this year was when we offered prayer at Bro McFarlane’s grave.

934989_10201332710182521_1991993891_nIn 1958, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Lodge Han Yang, the McFarlane Hunting Ancient tartan was selected as the official lodge color. The tartan was chosen in honor and remembrance to Bro. Alexander McFarlane, who was not only a founding member of Lodge Han Yang, but also served as the Right Worshipful Master in 1937. Originally from Canada, Bro. McFarlane had made a living in Korea as a miner and businessman. He lived with his Japanese wife, Sosa, in a village between Seoul and Inchon.

In 1940, during the time of the Japanese occupation of Korea, tensions between the Lodge and the Japanese administrators ran high. On several occasions, members of the Japanese secret police attempted to break into the Lodge room to search for evidence of a secret society, which was officially prohibited. During this time period, the Lodge officially functioned as a club and the secret police had the right to demand admittance to any meeting, but records show that they never enforced this power. However, members of the Lodge were continually questioned about their Masonic activities. As a direct result of these hostilities, Lodge Han Yang was put into early recess in the spring of 1940.

DSCN0135

In order to protect the records and other important items, several of the members who had decided to stay in Korea took possession of the Charter, documents, regalia and furniture. Since Bro. McFarlane was the treasurer, he volunteered to keep the financial records in his home. Soon after the recess, in 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and Lodge Han Yang was forced into its longest period of darkness.

By the time Lodge Han Yang reopened in June of 1946, Bro. McFarlane had completed his earthly labors and had traveled to the Grand Lodge above. His widow, however, remained faithful to Bro. McFarlane’s wishes and had securely kept the vital Lodge records. These were presented to the Brethren so that the Lodge could be reopened under the leadership of Bro. Jensen, who, as Master, had closed the lodge six years earlier.

The Widow’s Sons

Recently, the Widow’s Sons celebrated their 2nd Anniversary by having a ride and BBQ.

The Widows Sons R.A (Riding Association) is a Masonic Riding Association comprised of Freemasons. The purpose of the Widows Sons is to provide a social and fraternal outlet for Freemasons who ride and desire to socialize and travel the open roads with their Brethren. The requirements to be considered for membership are to be a Master Mason from a recognized Grand Lodge. The recognizing body used by Grand Chapter Korea is Grand Lodge of Scotland.

– The Widows Sons Korea Grand Chapter

The stone triangle or pyramid represents the 3 degrees in craft Masonry. The 3 points of the triangle represent the 3 Lesser Lights or 3 Burning Tapers which are a part of the furnishings of every Masonic Lodge.
The All-Seeing-Eye within the pyramid represents the watchfulness of the Great Architect of the Universe. It reminds us that we are always being watched or observed, and to therefore govern ourselves accordingly while in public, or while in the company of our brethren.
Within the points of the triangle are symbols representing 3 Officers Jewels; the Square, Plumb, and Level. These working tools are also representative of the 3 Lesser Lights and their Masonic interpretations.
The Rising Sun at the apex of the pyramid is representative of the fact that there are Masonic Lodges in all points of the globe. It can truly be said that “the sun never sets on Freemasonry”. The sun also represents the Worshipful Master of each Lodge, so the sun is positioned above the pinnacle of the pyramid and above the Square, or Masters Jewel.
The wings represent personal freedom and liberty which is an ideal Freemasons have embraced since the beginnings of our ancient and noble fraternity. Wings are also a symbol which is much embraced by those who enjoy sport motorcycling, and is used in many motorcycle related logos such as Harley Davidson, just to name one example.
The words “Meet on the level & Part upon the square” were added to remind our non-riding brethren that the Widows Sons are Masons above all, and we should be greeted and treated as such. It is our hope that this will help our brethren to overcome any prejudices or preconceptions they may have regarding those who ride motorcycles. The phrase also stimulates the curiosity of Non-Masons who see our logo and may cause them to inquire about its meaning. This allows us to respond about its Masonic nature and inform them about Freemasonry and our fraternity.

The term “Widow’s Son” refers to Hiram Abiff, the principal architect of King Solomon’s temple. In the book of Kings, he is described as the son of a widow from the tribe of Naphtali who was the son of a Tyrian bronze worker, sent for by Solomon to make furnishings and ornate decorations for the new temple.

Freemasons also refer to themselves as “Widow’s Sons”:

The Freemasons call themselves the widow’s sons, because, after the death of our respectable Master, the Freemasons took care of his mother, whose children they called themselves, because Adonhiram had always considered them as his Brethren. (Chapron, 1812)

Hiram Abiff,
the original widow’s son.

The ride was done as a memorial for Task Force Smith.

The Task Force Smith Memorial in Osan

On July 5, 1950 an American task force of 400 infantry men moved into Osan to delay the North Korean Army from advanding further South until more American troops could arrive. Named after its commander, Colonel Charles B. Smith, the task force was successful in warding off North Korean forces for several hours before retreating south.

We remember the sacrifices made by about 150 American soldiers that were either killed, wounded or went missing.

Visitation for Absent Brethren

Not long ago, we visited Yanghwajin Foreign Cemetery to honor past brethren of Lodge Han Yang.

Yanghwajin Foreign Cemetery is located in Hapjeong-dong, Seoul.

Yanghwajin Cemetery overlooks the Han River and was designated in 1890 as a site for foreign missionaries by King Gojong. The cemetery was also a victim of close quarters combat during the Korean War and war damage to many of the grave markers is quite evident. It is estimated that approximately 30,000 Koreans and 500 foreigners visit every year.

A lot of recently passed brethren are located in the Northern part of the cemetery, so we stopped there first to pay our respects.

RWM Pete leads us in a prayer commemorating those brethren who have been raised to the celestial lodge above.

Eventually, we met up with the Widow’s Sons – a local masonic biker’s club made up of members from different lodges in the area.

The Widow’s Sons pay their respects.

Not only one of the most prominent brethren, but one of the most prominent people buried at the cemetery is Bro. Ernest T. Bethell – one of the founders of Lodge Han Yang. He is number 2 in the roll book. One reason I greatly respect this brother is because he, like myself, always believed in promoting the masonic tenet of truth.

Bro. Bethell served as a spokesperson for Koreans under the Japanese colonial rule by launching Daehan Mail Shinbo (Greater Korea Daily News). Bethell staffed his paper with leaders of the independence movement and published articles that criticized and protested against the brutality of Japanese colonial rule. He was thrown in jail for sedition and died a year later in 1909 of cardiac enlargement. The monument that Koreans erected for him was defaced by the Japanese, but another one was erected near the original one in 1964.

After taking a walking tour of the entire cemetery, we all went out to eat. The Widow’s Sons certainly did make a lot of Korean heads turn as they pulled out of the parking lot.

Seung dreams of the day when not only he can become a Master Mason, but also a Widow’s Son.

It’s important to pay tribute to every deceased brother who has played a part in keeping Freemasonry alive and well for hundreds of years. As we follow in their footsteps, we pause, take a moment, and express our belief that our brothers still live, and that their graves are merely resting places for their mortal frames.

Brethren, shall we pause a while, and be of one accord
to note those who are missing from this, our festive board?
Shall we think of absent brethren, and take this drought of wine,
and hope that they do likewise, at the very stroke of nine?
